Cadances: Battleworks Dance Company Cadances, a newly commissioned dance work created by Robert Battle and sponsored by the Mohawk Valley Dance Partnership (comprised of the Arts in Education Institute, Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute and Hamilton College) will be presented this summer and premiered in November. Cadences was developed during a residency at the Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute's and Hamilton College’s dance studios in the spring of 2007. Choreographer Robert Battle and composer Philip Hamilton collaboratively explored the convergence of vocal melodies, world-beat rhythms, and classical music. Battle will also present several of his signature works, Takademe and the solo excerpt from Alleluia.
Battle’s intrigue with vocalizations and the intonations of the physical led him to exploring the idea of a voice and dance landscape as the impetus for this new piece. In Cadences, Battle investigates voice – the different usages of voice- physically and metaphorically. His choreography blends music and movement in a series of solos, duets, and contrasting combinations that, “… make an audience sit up and take notice, marvel, even laugh. His work reaches over the edge of the stage and communicates with people." (The New York Sun)
After founding the Battleworks Dance Company in 2001 Mr. Battle's work has been presented in many locations in New York City including the Joyce Theater, Symphony Space, and Dance Theater Workshop. In 2005 Battle was honored at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts with a medal proclaiming him a “Master of African-American Choreography.”
